USA Today has published an interesting article talking about the growth in family business classes across the country. According to the article, Stetson University in DeLand, Fla., which graduated its first class of family-business majors in 2006, says 42% of its business students and 37% of all students come from families involved in family businesses. Closer to home, UNC Chapel Hill, UNCG, and Wake Forest University all offer family business classes.

Family Business USA is a big advocate of these courses and encourages family businesses to take advantage of these opportunities.

I had the opportunity to attend the North Carolina CEO forum and see Jack Welch present. When I asked him his thoughts about family business succession, his response was as one would expect: “Family Businesses have it much more difficult as they have to deal with the family element on top of the business element. Many family business owners are foolishly overly reluctant to part with their equity. They should realize that bringing in high caliber management with some capital can take the business to an entire new level.” Leave it to Jack Welch, the former CEO of GE to call it like it is.

Introducing Family Business North Carolina

While I have been consulting to family businesses for quite some time, and of course have personal familiarity with family businesses through my own family’s business, my articles in the News & Observer have generated a lot of activity from family businesses in the Carolinas. As such, we have constructed this entity to cater to you, the family business North Carolina and family business South Carolina.

With that said, our work is certainly not contained to the Carolinas. We travel to clients all over the country, and internationally, to help them work through family business succession planning and issues, improve communication, and enhance business performance.

If you are new to this site and are unfamiliar with the family business articles published in the News & Observer, just do a search for “Henry Hutcheson News & Observer”, or go to this link: http://www.newsobserver.com/search_results/henry%20hutcheson

I look forward to placing additional information here in the future. And as always, please keep your questions coming!
